2018 Summer Institute Starts the Year Off Right

Updated: Aug 30, 2018

In late July, HUDL hosted its tenth anniversary summer camp on the University of Houston campus. With more than 130 students attending, it was HUDL's largest camp ever.

Students came together from across the Houston area for the six-day camp to hone their skills, learn about the debate topics for the year ahead, and practice. Classes were offered in each of HUDL's debate formats, including Cross-Examination, Public Forum, World Schools, and Lincoln-Douglas.

And for the first time, HUDL welcomed students from Harris County schools outside HISD. With the support of CASE (the Harris County Department of Education's Center for Afterschool, Summer, and Enrichment), 35 students from Harris County schools participated in camp. Danielle Bartz, HCDE Chief of Staff; James Colbert, Jr., HCDE Superintendent; and Lisa Caruthers, Executive Director of CASE, visited camp during the week to offer the students their encouragement. HISD's Don Hernandez, Manager of UIL Academics for HISD, attended camp and welcomed students to campus.

HISD middle schoolers also got to participate in their own camp experience this year, with a special four-day session on the T.H. Rogers campus. Sixty-three middle-school debaters attended to get a great start on the year ahead.

HUDL thanks the many supporters who made this year's camp possible. Special thanks go to CASE and H-E-B Grocery for their generous contributions.
